How to Make $450 a Month with Your Blog

I just came across Paula’s list of blogger salaries (via ProBlogger). She’s got a great compilation of blogger earnings, projecting one-year figures with some simple math. I commend Paula’s research, and I want to be on the next list. ๐Ÿ™‚

I got a raise

My last earnings post was for January, where I reported about $300 of income for the month. I was (and still am) darn proud of that.

But now I get to show you how I earned a raise!

I earned $450.14 in April

That’s right folks, I pushed myself to a 50% raise in just three months. My traffic has steadily increased, but the big earners are not AdSense or other ads. Those sources definitely help, but they’re not where the real money is.

Here’s the secret for me: consulting. I help people with their blogging efforts, and it’s working out great for everyone. I was fortunate enough to take on another client in April, so that’s helped to increase overall earnings.

A quick break down for you:

The rest of April’s earnings are from writing on another blog (paid for each post) and blog consulting. Out of courtesy for the privacy of other parties, I won’t post those numbers. But I will say that consulting is the biggest earner out of all.

The AdSense number increased pretty nicely since January. I think that is due to my traffic increase since then. AdSense isn’t tied directly to traffic, but you do earn more money with more visitors.

What’s next?

I definitely want to break the $500 barrier. And I need to find ways to earn more money for my time. I spend a lot of time blogging, and I’d definitely like it to pay off more. With my current earnings, I’m definitely making a tiny hourly wage.

Thanks to some inspiration about blog revenue, I’m pursuing some direct ad sales and sponsorships for Legal Andrew. I’ve made a few pitches so far with no luck. But I’ll keep at it and see what turns up.

By the way, if you’d like to advertise at Legal Andrew or be a sponsor, here are the details. Just drop me a line and we’ll talk.

*chuckle* .. the question is: are you sure you want to become a lawyer, or open an online business doing internet consultancy?

    Owen,

That’s definitely a question that’s crossed my mind many times in life. But I’m so close to being a lawyer that I’m not turning back now. At the very least, this will provide a fun and lucrative side-line.

I’m happy to say, I’m one of those blog consulting customers that gave him a raise. I recomend him to anyone. He’s very honest, has a great detailed invoice, listens to the customer, and just plain knows what to do to make a blog work better.

Andrew, maybe you can consider selling ads on your site to people not affiliated with the typical ad agencies. Such as, let other bloggers pay you a monthly fee to put an on your site. If you do this, count me in. You can very the monthly price by the “real estate” the ad appears.

By the way, whatever you’re using for your comments layout, can you put in the to do list? I like it.

    Hi Pro Se,

I’m flattered by your kind words. Thank you so much for the great recommendation. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s funny that you mention advertising on my own. That’s exactly what I plan to do. In fact, I have an advertising page set up.

And I can definitely work on your blog comment layout. Not a problem. I’ll finish my last exam tomorrow morning. Then I can get to some real blog work.

    Take care,
    Andrew

LOL. We just cross-posted. No problem. It’s easy to miss info on a blog. There’s lots of things to see.

Congratulations! $450 would be a monthly contribution to offset my student loans. Looks like Text Link Ads is where the money is at. Sadly, I don’t qualify for them because my traffic isn’t high enough. I feel my blog has hit a rut. I’ve been averaging about 70 readers a day for the past few months. I can’t seem to break that barrier. Any suggestions?

    Hi Brett,

TLA is definitely a great source of income, depending upon the blog. I’ve heard from many bloggers that they have trouble filling up their ad slots. I think a lot of that has to do with over-saturated niches. Law doesn’t seem to have a problem. I’m not sure what personal finance is like at TLA.

As for boosting traffic, I’ve got a couple ideas to share. I’ve been thinking up a post that would speak directly to that. I hope to get it up in a day or two.

Here’s a teaser: experiment with posts that seem off topic for your blog. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Take care,
    Andrew

Great earnings, its weird you make more from TLA than AdSence! Have you made many TLA referrals or is that all from link selling?

    Matt,

The TLA earnings are all links – no referrals. From what I understand, I’m somewhat of an oddball, doing that good with TLA (on a small site). I’m not doing anything special. Like I mentioned above, I think part of it is being in a non-saturated niche.

That’s one reason I like posting my earnings – so we can all try to learn from each other. Information is power!

    Take care,
    Andrew
