Pay Yourself to Get Things Done

Do you ever have problems getting motivated? I sure do.

Why not reward yourself when you get things done? By “reward,” I mean money. Pay yourself to get things done.

My problem

I’m trying to ride my bike more. But it’s hard to get motivated to ride. The irony is that I like riding.

So when I was on my ride this evening, I came up with this “pay myself” idea. I’ll reward myself for riding my bicycle. I think it will help get me motivated.

The bike payment plan

The plan I came up with is pretty simple. For every day that I ride at least 30 minutes, I’ll put $0.75 in my “bike fund.” I can use this money, and only this money, to buy cycling gear.

This is still the planning phase, so my plan might change slightly. I want to get the right balance where I will have to ride a lot to buy any gear. But I also want to get some new gear fairly often, to show the fruits of my efforts.

What’s your plan

The best part of this idea is that it can work for many things. And maybe you could “pay” yourself with something other than money.

Do you have a place in your life where you could implement this idea?

Andrew, I like the concept of this. I’ve been training for a triathlon (my first one…ever) and staying motivated has been difficult at times. So, I’ve been trying to hold myself accountable by logging each training session on a new blog. Nobody reads it but me, however, that sort of virtual accountability prevents me from being too lazy. I mean, I don’t want to look like a total slacker if someone actually does come by to see it, you know?

And congrats again on the BAR and your new gig….best of luck!

    Matt,

Your idea about blogging your training sessions sounds good. I’m sure you’ll do great in the triathlon!

Thanks for the kind wishes. I look forward to seeing how my blog evolves as I start my real career.

well, I know it’s going to evolve at least a little bit later this week! I’ll have a couple requests for you…

  4. I really like this idea. I’ve been wanting to loss weight. So I started running but after a while it has become hard to get motivated. I think something like this could really help me get back on track!

This is wonderful. Most of the time, we lack motivation due to a lot of factors. But with this idea, we’ll have another way to keep us motivated.

That’s a great suggestion. I think almost all of us have the same problem with motivation. If only motivation works for us every time we try it.
